COP17/CMP7 medical treatment

During the event, medical centres will also be located at the meeting venues and medical personnel will be available to provide emergency or primary health care if required. In the unlikely event of a patient becoming seriously ill, or incurring a serious injury, emergency medical transportation to the nearest appropriate health facility will be provided.

Any treatment requiring a prescription, hospital examination, or hospitalization will be for the account of the delegate.

Delegates are encouraged to obtain medical travel insurance from a reputable organization to ensure a trouble free trip.

Durban has top level hospitals with many just 10-15 minutes from hotels and the International Convention Centre.


COP17/CMP7 medical treatment centres:

International Convention Centre (ICC)

  • 3 medical centres including a VIP medical centre
  • all delegates have access to these centres

Medical centres at the ICC will be equipped with:

  • full resuscitation capability
  • medical doctors
  • advanced life support [ALS] paramedics
  • primary health care nurses
  • fully equipped ambulances

Durban Exhibition Centre

The medical centre will be equipped with:

  • casualty clearing station
  • 12 bed medical facility
  • full resuscitation capability
  • medical doctors
  • primary health care nurses
  • ALS paramedics
  • fully equipped ambulances
  • disaster buses

Roving Medical Units

Units will be equipped with:

  • full resuscitation capability
  • ALS paramedics
  • medical doctor

Ports of entry

Medical centres will be established at the following ports of entry:

  • Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport
  • Durban’s King Shaka International Airport
  • Pretoria’s Waterkloof Airport

Ports of entry will be equipped with the following:

  • full resuscitation capability
  • medical doctors
  • advanced life support paramedics
  • primary health care nurses
  • fully equipped ambulances

South African healthcare

  • The South African health care system consists of the public sector, which provides emergency care and the private sector, which operates on a fee-for-service basis and accepts patients covered by medical insurance.
  • Medical facilities, especially in the private sector, in cities and larger towns equal some of the best in the world.
  • Large networks of hospitals offer excellent service, and pharmacies are well-stocked.
  • All major hotels will have contacts details of physicians, pharmacies and dentists.
